Wright Brothers Day

Amanda Wright Lane

Wright-Patterson AFB, OH — Dignitaries and visitors braved icy conditions to visit Wright Memorial Hill for the observation of Wright Brothers Day—the day which marks the anniversary of the Wrights' first powered flight. This is the 105th anniversary of that historic flight which took place on December 17, 1903 at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.

As part of the First Flight Ceremony, the Presidential Proclamation was read by Mr. Leonard Simpson, Acting Superintendent of the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historic Park. Amanda Wright Lane, the great grandniece of Wilbur and Orville Wright, participated in the wreath-laying ceremony, which has been a Miami Valley tradition since 1978, and spoke with reporters afterwards. Attendees expressed some disappointment when the speaker announced that the flyover was canceled because of the ice.
